Box score
After a scoreless first half, the Belmont Abbey men's soccer
team scored three unanswered goals in the final 45 minutes to claim
a 3-0 win over the visiting Mount Olive Trojans this afternoon
before a capacity crowd of 600 on hand for Homecoming. The Abbey
improves to 4-4-2 overall and 3-1-1 in Conference Carolinas, while
the Trojans drop to 1-7-1 overall and 0-4-0 in Conference
Carolinas.
Neither team found the back of the net in the opening period in
which the Crusaders outshot the Trojans 6-3, but the Abbey held a
9-4 edge in shots in the second half as three of those found the
back of the net.
Aaron Weldon gave the Crusaders the only goal they would need in
the 79th minute, as he collected the ball from 25 yards out, pushed
it forward, sidestepped a defender and slipped a shot past Mount
Olive goalkeeper Brad Newman, who was shielded, for the goal.
Four minutes later, Timmi Borges Da Silva widened the gap to
2-0. Stuart Kirk lifted a corner kick to the center of the box,
where it was cleared out by a Trojans defender right to the foot of
DaSilva, who rocketed home a blast from 19 yards out.
With 44 seconds left, the Abbey added an insurance goal as Matt
Dolan pinged the left post, and the carom came right to Kyle
Searles, who one-timed a shot into an empty net for his first
career goal.
Belmont Abbey outshot the Trojans 15-7 and held a 10-6 edge in
corner kicks. Louis Liberatore made four saves, three in the second
half. Newman logged two saves.
