St. Andrews Presbyterian College scored the first two goals of
the game and held a 3-1 advantage after the first quarter but
Belmont Abbey College scored all six goals in the second quarter to
take over en route to a 14-8 Conference Carolinas men's lacrosse
victory on Wednesday afternoon. The Crusaders won their third
straight game leveling its overall record at 5-5 and moving to 3-2
in conference action. The Knights dropped their sixth consecutive
contest falling to 3-11 overall and 0-4 in the league.
Miles Elliott scored both of his goals in the Crusaders second
quarter run including a goal with less than two seconds left to
give the Abbey a 7-3 lead at halftime. Elliott and classmate Dave
DiLuigi tied for game-high scoring honors with four points apiece.
DiLuigi had three goals and one assist while Elliott provided two
goals and two assists.
Kyle Loda netted a hat trick to lead the Knights scorers. The
sophomore duo of Nick Lewnes and Ryan Hoover -- who are both from
Arnold, Maryland -- had two goals apiece for St. Andrews. Junior
Kyle Carnaggio had a game-high three assists.
Loda and Lewnes scored the first two goals of the afternoon on a
pair of extra-man opportunities. DiLuigi put the visitors on the
board with an unassisted goal with 2:45 left in the first quarter
but Loda scored with two seconds on the clock to extend the Knights
advantage to 3-1 after the opening quarter.
Belmont Abbey came out firing in the second quarter going on a
six-goal run that included a goal in the first minute by DiLuigi
and Elliott's tally as time was expiring in the first half. DiLuigi
had a pair of goals in the second quarter to register his hat trick
in the first half.
St. Andrews closed the deficit in half, 7-5, but scoring the
first two goals out of the midway intermission. Loda scored exactly
one minute into the second half while Hoover scored 60 seconds
later. The Abbey maintained its two-goal edge for the next 11
minutes before senior Michael Brown and freshman Terrance Sullivan
scored in the final two minutes to double up the Crusaders
advantage to 9-5 heading into the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Harrison Young scored his only goal in the first
minute of the final frame but Belmont Abbey followed with the next
four goals to put the game away before coasting to the six-goal
victory Harrison Young also had one assist.
Knights' sophomore starting goalkeeper Patrick Wade made a
game-high 14 saves. Crusaders' sophomore counterpart Tony Kikola
made eight stops in 53 minutes of action to earn the victory in
net. Freshman backup Merrick Reiland had five saves in the final
seven minutes to prevent a Knights comeback.
Freshman Jarrett Bergin tied DiLuigi with three goals. Bergin
scored two of his goals on EMO opportunities as the BAC went
3-for-6 on extra-man opportunities. Brown and Sullivan both found
the back of the cage twice while sophomore Douglas Lipka and
sophomore Damon DeLuca had the Crusaders other goals. Lipka had a
three-point performance with a team-high three assists.
