MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — Jack Clough tallied four goals and
Eddie Kielkopf made 12 saves as the Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team was locked in a tight battle with North Greenville in the Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship Game Sunday afternoon at the Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex.
Despite the tallies, it was North Greenville who scored a late goal as the Crusaders dropped a 6-5 contest in heartbreaking fashion.
Belmont Abbey closes the season with an 11-4 overall record while North Greenville is now 12-5 on the season and earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Belmont Abbey tallied the first goal of the game with Nate Lorenzo's opening goal less than five minutes into the contest.
- North Greenville tallied the next three goals with one in the first and two more in the second quarter.
- Belmont Abbey pulled ahead to close the half with three goals from Clough, the last of which came 22 seconds before halftime.
- The Trailblazers took the lead with two goals in the third quarter.
- Clough's fourth goal of the game came with less than six minutes left to tie the game.
- NGU went ahead with its go-ahead goal with 3:34 remaining in the contest.
- Belmont Abbey looked to have the tying goal with just over two minutes remaining but it was waved off.
- The Crusaders finished with 36 shots for the game, 15 on goal.
- Belmont Abbey had 20 ground balls led by three from Garrett Clare.
- Alex Garcia and Ben Johnson had three caused turnovers each.
