Kielkopf Records Career-High 18 Saves As Crusaders Rally to Earn Spot in Championship Game

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team is returning to the Conference Carolinas Championship game for the second straight year thanks to a 10-8 semifinal victory over Mount Olive Friday afternoon at the Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex.

Eddie Kielkopf finished with a career-high 18 saves and held the Trojans to just one goal in the second half to earn the win.

Jack Clough led Belmont Abbey with three goals while Nate Lorenzo and Jacob Chandler had two each.

With Friday's result, Belmont Abbey is now 11-3 overall while Mount Olive closes its season at 7-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crusaders got off to a good start in the first quarter as Mikey Sweigart and Chandler tallied the first two goals.
  • Mount Olive rallied as the two teams were tied 3-3 at the end of the opening 15 minutes.
  • Just like the first quarter, the Abbey scored the opening two goals of the second quarter with Jack Clough and Nate Lorenzo getting on the board.
  • The Trojans scored four goals to take a 7-5 lead but Belmont Abbey ended the rally right before halftime thanks to a late goal from Clough to make it 7-6 at the break.
  • The third quarter was a defensive battle but Lorenzo pulled the Crusaders even at 7-all thanks to an assist from Jeremy Mahoney.
  • Clough gave the Crusaders the lead for good with his third goal early in the fourth quarter.
  • Thomas Lewis and Chandler tallied the final two goals of the afternoon for the Abbey.
  • Mount Olive got back within two goals at 10-8 but Kielkopf and the defense stood tall as he made four saves over the final three minutes to help seal the win for the Crusaders.
  • Belmont Abbey had a 44-37 advantage in shots.
  • The Crusaders finished with 24 ground balls with Alex Singh and Mason Thomas leading the way with four each. Singh also finished with three caused turnovers.

  • Belmont Abbey will face No. 1 seed North Greenville in the Conference Carolinas Championship game Sunday at 1 p.m. at Mount Olive.
  • The winner of Sunday's contest will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
