Belmont Abbey closed out the home portion of the 2009 season
with a split against visiting Seton Hill University. The Crusaders
took game one 10-6 but dropped the second game 4-3 to the
Griffins. The Abbey now stands at 32-23, while SHU brings its
record to 30-13.
A three-run homer by sophomore Daniel Kassouf gave Belmont Abbey a
4-0 lead in the third inning of the first game but that lead
evaporated in the top of the fourth when Tony Deangelis hit a grand
slam to right center field. The Crusaders responded in the bottom
of the inning, however, scoring five runs after the second out was
recorded. Kassouf came through again in the inning with a two-run
single.
Senior Patrick Atwell had a run-scoring single in the fifth to make
it 10-4 BAC and Seton Hill scored twice in the sixth to complete
the scoring. Tyler Powell struck out six in five and a third
innings to get the win, with Zach Horne pitching the final inning
and two-thirds and striking out three. Matt McCartney took the
loss for Seton Hill, allowing seven runs in three and two-thirds
innings with five strikeouts.
The Abbey scored first again in the second game when senior Tyler
McKenzie was struck by a pitch to lead the game off and later
scored on a throwing error by the third baseman. The Griffins tied
the game at 1-1 in the third inning and took the lead in the fifth
on a wild pitch.
McKenzie tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth with a
sacrifice fly to score Roland Rodriguez but Seton Hill took the
lead for good in the sixth inning. Mark Henry singled with one out
and Luke Pisarcik followed up with a two run shot for the 4-2
lead. Josh Frazier scored to make it 4-3 in the bottom of the
sixth and Patrick Atwell reached third with one out in the seventh
but could not get home on the final two at-bats.
Dan Astfalk allowed two earned runs over five and two-thirds
innings to get the win for Seton Hill and DJ Cannon earned a clutch
save by striking out the final two batters of the game. Senior
John Merritt pitched a solid four and a third innings for the
Crusaders with one hit allowed in his final home game. Steven
Thiele took the loss with two runs allowed in an inning of work,
while Nate Cudney pitched the final inning and two-thirds with two
strikeouts and no hits allowed.
