BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team used a pair of late-inning tiebreakers as the Crusaders swept a doubleheader of the Barton Bulldogs on Saturday to complete a three-game sweep.
The Crusaders won the opener 4-3 in walk-off fashion and used an eight-run eighth inning to pull off a 13-5 win in the series finale.
Joe Whitaker delivered the walk-off winner for the Crusaders in the opener and
Matthew Fattore finished with four hits on the day.
Spencer Cipro earned his sixth win of the season and
Bailey Faircloth did so as well for the Abbey in the second game.
The Crusaders have won 10 games in a row and 13 of the last 14 overall.
Belmont Abbey improves to 26-8 overall and 19-5 in Conference Carolinas play while Barton is now 7-21 and 5-16 in the league.
GAME 1
- Barton jumped out to an early 1-0 lead but a strong defensive play by Caleb Burr in center field led to an inning-ending double play to keep it a one-run deficit in the second.
- Burr got the Crusaders on the board in the third inning on a sacrifice fly after Fattore reached with a lead-off single.
- The Bulldogs had the bases loaded in the fourth inning but Cipro was able to work his way out of the jam.
- Burr gave the Abbey a 2-1 lead in the fifth on an RBI single and added a second run in the inning after Fattore scored on an obstruction play.
- Barton rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning which set the stage for Belmont Abbey's walk-off.
- Josh Wilson got things started with a single and advanced to second after Fattore was hit by a pitch.
- After Evan MacIntyre came in as a pinch runner, he later scored as Whitaker drove the ball to left field to end the game.
- Cipro earned his sixth win of the season by striking out two in his fourth complete game of the season.
GAME 2
- Barton took an early lead in the second game with three runs in the first two innings but Belmont Abbey answered with a three-run third inning.
- Whitaker got the scoring started with an RBI single and Mason Janz scored on a wild pitch.
- Whitaker later scored on a sacrifice fly from Todd Velotta.
- Sawyer Osborne struck out five in his five innings and allowed just two hits in his final three innings.
- The Crusaders took the lead in the fifth with an RBI double from Steinberg and a sacrifice fly from Jake Bidoglio.
- Barton rallied for two more runs in the sixth to pull even at 5-5.
- Faircloth pitched two scoreless innings to keep the game even.
- The Crusaders broke the game open in the eighth when MacIntyre scored on a Barton throwing error.
- Velotta scored a wild pitch and Janz had an RBI single.
- Jacob Steinberg cleared the bases with a three-run double and the Crusaders capped the inning scoring runs on a hit by pitch and a second wild pitch.
- Wyatt Clarke closed the game out with a scoreless ninth inning by striking out the final two batters he faced.

- Belmont Abbey heads on the road to face Wingate at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a matchup of top Southeast Region teams.
- The Crusaders will play two more road games before taking a break for Easter.
