WINGATE, N.C. — Mason Janz hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the tenth inning as the No. 24 Belmont Abbey baseball team rallied for a 7-4 win over No. 16 Wingate Tuesday at Ron Christopher Stadium.
Janz's home run was his first of the season as the Crusaders erased a two-run deficit in the top of the ninth inning before completing the comeback in the tenth. He had three hits while
Jack Boyles had two for the Abbey.
Drew Stegura pitched two scoreless innings in relief and recorded four strikeouts to earn his seventh win of the season.
Belmont Abbey is now 27-8 and has won 11 straight games while Wingate is now 26-9.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Boyles recorded the first hit of the game with an infield single in the second inning.
- Wingate got the first runs on the board with a three-run third inning.
- Belmont Abbey broke through in the fifth inning with Janz scoring on a passed ball after reaching base with a one-out single.
- Jake Bidoglio drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2.
- Wingate had runners on second and third but Bailey Faircloth stemmed Wingate's chances to keep it 3-2.
- He replaced Davin Miller-Madden, who struck out six in 4.2 innings.
- The Bulldogs extended the lead with a home run in the sixth inning.
- Wyatt Clarke pitched two scoreless innings to keep the Crusaders with a chance.
- Belmont Abbey came back in the ninth as Janz scored on an RBI double from Caleb Burr.
- Jacob Steinberg drove in the tying run in Joe Whitaker on a sacrifice fly.
- Josh Wilson hit a lead-off single in the tenth that was followed by Michael Fattore being hit by a pitch.
- That set the stage for Janz's first home run of the season to give the Crusaders their first lead of the game.
- The Bulldogs got two runners on in the tenth but Belmont Abbey was able to turn a double play to end the game.
