AUGUSTA, Ga. — Jack Boyles,
Todd Velotta and
Jacob Steinberg all finished with three hits each as the Belmont Abbey baseball team extended its win streak to 13 games thanks to a 16-8 victory over Augusta Wednesday evening at Jaguars Field.
The 12 wins is tied for the longest active win streak in all of Division II. Colorado Mesa, Frostburg State and Findlay all had 12-game win streaks along with the Abbey entering tonight's contest.
The offense was going strong for the Crusaders as they scored in the first eight innings of play.
Ethan Yarbrough picked up his fifth win of the season pitching 2.2 innings of relief and striking out three batters.
Belmont Abbey improves to 28-8 with the win while Augusta is 16-20.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Joe Whitaker got the Crusaders on the board in the first inning with his 15th home run of the season.
- The 15 home runs is also tied for the lead in Conference Carolinas and is second overall in all of Division II.
- After Augusta got two runners on in the first, Yarbrough came in retired the first two batters he faced to keep it a 1-0 lead.
- The Crusaders added two runs in the second inning with RBI singles from Boyles and Matthew Fattore.
- The Jaguars responded with three runs in the second but an RBI single from Josh Wilson gave the Abbey a 4-3 lead in the third.
- Belmont Abbey pushed the lead to 8-3 thanks to a Steinberg double in the fourth inning while Boyles and Fattore each drove in runs in the fifth.
- Josh Wise retired the first five batters he faced from the fourth inning for the Abbey.
- Todd Velotta pushed the lead to 9-3 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth while a four-run seventh inning helped the Abbey break the game open.
- The Crusaders capped off the scoring with another RBI single from Steinberg and two runs scoring off of a wild pitch.
- Belmont Abbey has won 13 overall and 17 of their last 20 games dating back to March 3.
- The 19 hits is the fifth most in a game this season.
