Belmont Abbey senior attackman Michael Brown led all scorers
with seven goals, six in the first half, as the Crusaders men's
lacrosse team advanced to the semifinal round of the Conference
Carolinas tournament with an easy 19-7 win over the visiting St.
Andrews Presbyterian Knights this afternoon. The Abbey extends its
winning streak to four, improving to 6-5, while the Knights end
their season with a 4-12 ledger. The Abbey advances to play the
top-seeded Limestone Saints Friday night at 5:00 p.m. at Memorial
Stadium in Charlotte.
Brown posted seven goals on 12 shots with three assists with two
ground balls. Jedd Gardner and Austin Whitesell both added three
goals, while James Regan and Dave DiLuigi both posted two. Miles
Elliott and Tom Ottman both had one. Brown's three assists led all
players, while Elliott and Gardner had two. Brendan Wood had the
other.
Ryan Hoover and Phil Hardy led the Knights with two goals each,
while Ethan Young, Fred Parsons and Steven Tramonte all had one
each.
The contest was never in doubt as the Abbey led 7-0 on ten shots
after the first quarter as Brown scored three times, while DiLuigi
posted two. Elliott and Whitesell had single goals. The advantage
grew to 12-2 at the half as Belmont Abbey outscored SAPC 5-2 in the
period, with Brown scoring three times. In the second half, the
Cruaders outscored the Knights 7-5, outscoring them 4-1 in the
third, with the Knights scoring four times in the fourth
quarter.
Defensively the Abbey caused 12 turnovers as Gardner and Tristan
Keas led the way with three each. Tony Kikola made nine saves in
the first 30 minutes, while Merrick Reiland, who manned the net in
the second half, made eight saves.
