On a rainy and cold afternoon, the Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse
team's late rally fell shot as it dropped a 10-8 decision to the
visiting Pfeiffer Falcons this afternoon at Alumni Field. Pfeiffer
remains unbeaten at 6-0 overall and 2-0 in Conference Carolinas,
while the Crusaders dip to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in Conference
Carolinas.
After Pfeiffer took a 3-1 lead in the opening quarter, the Abbey
responded by outscoring the Falcons 5-2 in the second quarter to
knot the game at five at the half. Pfeiffer would respond by
scoring three goals, to just one for the Crusaders, after the third
period, and both teams scored twice in the fourth quarter.
Belmont Abbey outshot the Falcons 34-30 as Michael Brown led all
players with five goals, while Jedd Gardner and Brian Watson both
finished with two and one, respectively. Brown, Gardner, Miles
Elliott, and Matt Spivey all had one assist.
Pfeiffer was led by Chad Olsen's four goals, while Shawn Cross
and Dan Messler had two each. Jameson Schultz and Patrick
Faulhauber both had one. Kevin Anderson and Cross led the Falcons
with a pair of assists each.
Defensively, the Abbey won the ground ball battle 43-42 and
caused 19 turnovers as Tristan Keas had four caused turnovers,
while Gardner, Tom Ottman and Damon DeLuca each finished with
three. Keas and Dave DiLuigi both had six ground balls, and DiLuigi
won nine face offs in 11 tries.
Tony Kikola made 14 saves in the net and had three ground
balls.
