Spencer Cipro swept the Conference Carolinas Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Tuesday. Whitaker was named the Player of the Week while Cipro was Pitcher of the Week.
Whitaker put together another outstanding week for the Abbey, finishing 10 of 19 from the plate with a pair of home runs, three double and 12 runs batted in. Both of his home runs came during the three-game sweep of King from this past weekend while he also recorded three hits in a road win at then No. 9 Lenoir-Rhyne. He currently is batting .430 on the season while leading the team with 12 home runs and 49 runs batted in.
Cipro put together one of his best starts of the season as he threw a complete-game shutout in the opener of the doubleheader on Saturday against King. He allowed just three hits and struck out two batters and had just one walk on 78 pitches in a 6-0 win over the Tornado. The right-hander currently has a 2.22 ERA and has three complete games over 48.2 innings pitched.
Belmont Abbey takes on Emory & Henry at 3 p.m. Tuesday and will play Mars Hill in a rescheduled contest at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Abbey Yard.
