Box Score

The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team outshot Erskine 26-3 and attempted all 12 corner kicks in the match as four different players scored in an easy 5-0 Conference Carolinas victory this afternoon at Alumni Field. Belmont Abbey's winning streak grows to nine as the Crusaders improve to 12-2-1 overall and 9-0-0 in Conference Carolinas, while Erskine drops to 1-14-0 overall and 0-8-0 in league play.

The Crusaders, ranked seventh regionally, have now outscored their Conference Carolinas opponents 38-2 and have recorded shutouts seven times in nine matches.

After 33 minutes of scoreless play, the Crusaders broke through in the 34th minute as senior Meghan Philp scored for the twelfth time this season, as she buried a shot past goalkeeper Ashton Burgess. Philp finished off of a pass from Brooke Hedgspeth, who ran down a long pass from Jillian Lang. Hedgspeth one touched a cross to the center of the box where Philp was stationed.

It appeared as the Crusaders would lead 1-0 at the half, but Erskine gave the Crusaders a 2-0 lead with 44 seconds left courtesy of an own goal. The Crusaders sent a cross to the top of the box, where a trailing Flying Fleet defender attempted to block the ball, but her touch went directly into the upper right corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.

The Crusaders outshot Erskine 13-1 at the half. The only Erskine shot came from distance that Megan Bowen easily saved.

Belmont Abbey scored three times in the second half and Bowen preserved the shutout with a penalty kick save.

The third goal came in the 49th minute as Cassidy Coutinho buried a penalty kick after she was slashed down from behind in the box.

Six minutes later, Bowen recorded her second-consecutive penalty kick save, as she easily saved Brittany Jakiela's attempt from 12 yards to preserve the shutout.

Nine minutes later, Cierra Skyers increased the lead to 4-0 as she tapped in a shot from five yards out, taking a pass from Kate Hennessy.

Morgan Altieri closed the scoring at the 71:37 mark, blasting a shot from 25 yards out into the upper left corner of the net for her first goal of the season. Kooba Richard set up the goal and was credited with the assist.

Bowen moved her record to 9-1-0 as she stopped two shots in 72 minutes before giving way to Kat Andrews, who made one save in 19 minutes.

Belmont Abbey is back in action Tuesday night at 5:00 when going on the road to face North Greenville.
