Box Score

Belmont Abbey junior Meghan Philp netted two goals, the last coming in the 56th minute to break a 2-1 tie, as the Crusaders women's soccer team posted their fifth-straight victory with a 2-1 win over the visiting Lees-McRae Bobcats this afternoon at Alumni Field. Belmont Abbey improves to 7-5-2 overall and 6-2-0 in Conference Carolinas, while the Bobcats drop to 4-8-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the league.

Philp posted her second multi-goal match of the season as she also netted two in the 3-0 win at Emmanuel on September 27.

Laura Shelton nearly gave the Crusaders a 1-0 lead at the 2:12 mark as her unmarked shot from eight yards away was stopped by Kaitlyn Briggs at the last possible second.

14 minutes later, however, Shelton produced Philp's first goal of the match as she beat her mark in the left corner and sailed a left footed cross to the near post, where the junior from Houma, Louisiana headed home the winner to put the Crusaders ahead 1-0.

Belmont Abbey held its lead for what it appeared to be into the half, but the Bobcats pulled level with 47 seconds left in the first half.

After a scrum in the right corner of the box, Erica Allen, on a tough angle and to the right of the post, inched home a shot through the narrowest of spaces to deadlock the match at one.

Ten minutes after halftime, Philp put the Crusaders on top for good. Theresa Mateo gained possession near midfield and attacked the Bobcats zone. She passed back to Jillian Lang in the center of the field, who lofted a high pass to Philp, marked by two defenders, at the left corner. Philp won the ball, dribbled past both defenders and beat Briggs to the upper right corner for her team-leading ninth goal of the year.

Belmont Abbey outshot Lees-McRae 17-16 and attempted four of the five corner kicks in the match. Hannah Kohls stopped four shots, all from distance, while Briggs made seven saves.
