The Crusaders erupted for six runs in the second, and Parks
Smithey teamed with Kyle Rogers to carry the Abbey to a 10-2 win
over North Greenville University on Monday evening at Abbey Yard.
The win clinches a series victory at home for a senior class
participating in its final Conference Carolinas action at home.
With the series win, the Abbey moves to 25-9-1, while advancing to
9-7 within the league.
The Abbey expedited the scoring earlier than usual in this one,
sending starter Park Smithey (4-1) to the mound in the third ahead
by six. In the second, Kennan Stanley reached on an infield single,
followed by Emilio Pagan's single to left field. Conor Kwalwasser
would single to left center, scoring Stanley and moving Pagan to
third. With Ian Vazquez at the plate, the Crusaders brain trust
called for a double steal, and Pagan and Kwalwasser executed the
attack with precision, scoring Pagan. The theft of home was Pagan's
13th of the season. Vazquez was ultimately walked, and Ryan Allen
capitalized with a two-run triple, stretching the lead to 4-0.
Anthony Dimino and Michael Falsetti would cap the rally with sharp
RBI singles to stretch the lead to a half dozen. Smithey would
surrender a two run frame to North Greenville in the fourth,
closing the gap to 6-2. But the Crusaders were back at it in the
middle innings with a single tally in the fifth, and two more runs
in the sixth. Falsetti reached on a hit by pitch, and subsequently
scored on a wild pitch.
In the sixth, Anthony Dimino laced a low liner to center, that
Adam Taylor laid out for. The supreme effort was for naught, as
Dimino would plate Ian Vazquez, who collected his second hit two
batters earlier. Taylor would recover, and his cut off throw to
Taylor Hollifield was relayed to Wheeler Smith to thwart Dimino's
bid for an inside-the-park home run. The inning was extended as
Falsetti would reach again on an error, and score on Matt
Mazzolla's RBI safety. Allen and Dimino would round out the scoring
with consecutive doubles in the eighth to present the final
outcome. Kyle Rogers would retire nine of ten hitters to seal his
third save of the campaign. The nine out save was his third such
save of 2013, placing him behind only Emilio Pagan for the club
lead.
The Crusaders close out the home schedule tomorrow in a single
game tomorrow against Carson-Newman. The first pitch is slated for
3pm. Pregame of the Abbey Sports Network on WGNC 1450am and
www.wgnc.net begins at 2:45pm. Follow the Crusaders on twitter:
