Conor Kwalwasser scored three runs, stole three bases and
collected two hits in the Conference Carolinas finale for the
Crusaders Saturday afternoon. But his biggest moment came on a
play he didn't even hit safely on. The result for the Crusaders
was a 7-6 come-from-behind win over Barton on Saturday at Historic
Fleming Stadium in Wilson, NC.
The win for the Crusaders (27-15-1, 10-11) prevented the
Bulldogs from attaining the sixth seed in the upcoming Conference
Carolinas Baseball Tournament in Burlington. The win further
perpetuates a possible opening game against Coker in the opener of
the postseason tournament. The Crusaders are seeking revenge from
the Cobras, who won a three game series against the Abbey last
weekend.
The Crusaders sent Parks Smithey to the hill with a lead as
Emilio Pagan walked to lead off the game, followed by Gabby Amor's
single to send Pagan to third. The Crusaders would score on
Anthony Dimino's sacrifice fly, scoring Pagan. In the third,
Dimino would also spot Smithey a second lead with a two run double
that plated Kwalwasser and Emilio Pagan, giving the Abbey its
largest lead of 3-1. The Bulldogs bit back with three in the
third, as Avery Harper doubled home two runners to tie things up.
He would later score on Alex Brann's single. Barton would face Kyle
Rogers to begin their fourth inning, and touch Rogers for two
more. After four innings, Barton seemed poised to finish off the
Abbey and sweep the series. However, Rogers refused to allow
further damage in this game, and his tenacity would be
rewarded.
In the seventh, Kwalwasser would be involved in a play that kept
momentum on the side of the Bulldogs. After Kwalwasser doubled,
Amor hit a hot shot to left, sending Kwalwasser home for a most
important run. Clay Martin denied the scoring opportunity,
throwing a perfect one hop throw to Brann, ending the Crusaders
threat. The Crusaders threatened again in the eighth, but would
ultimately fail to plate a runner, entering the ninth inning with a
two run deficit.
In the ninth, Adam Venditti walked to lead off, followed by a
single from Quinn Hawksworth. Michael Accettullo and Levi Wright
would pinch run for the pair. Kwalwasser would then lay down a
perfect bunt, with the throw from the infield running all the way
toward the Crusaders bullpen. The two runs scored by virtue of the
error, tying the game. Pagan would score Kwalwasser on a sacrifice
fly to make the score 7-6. Kyle Rogers would then retire Barton in
the ninth to secure the win and salvage the series. Gabby Amor,
Dimino and Kwalwasser each had multi-hit games in the victory.
Mitchell Frazier would take the loss for Barton, dashing its hopes
of post season play. The Abbey now awaits the conference for
details regarding the 2013 Conference Carolinas Baseball
Tournament. Follow the Championship and all things Crusaders
