The 21st-ranked Belmont Abbey baseball team won both games of
its doubleheader against the visiting Bloomsburg Huskies, taking
game one 6-0 and coming from behind to win game two, 11-10 in seven
innings. The Abbey is now 14-4-1, while Bloomsburg drops to
3-6.
In the second game the Abbey scored the first eight runs, then
watched as Bloomsburg scored ten unanswered, but the Abbey scored
three times in the final inning, capped off by an Anthony Dimino
walk off single to plate the winning run.
The first game was all Belmont Abbey, as the Crusaders scored
two runs in both the third and fourth innings, and added another in
the fifth.
John Pilla, who finished three for four in game one, gave
starting pitcher Cody Stull the only run he would need in the
fourth. After a one out double by Gabby Amor, Pilla laced a single
to left to bring him home with the game's first run. Pilla scored
the second run as he moved to third on a single by Ian Vazquez and
scored on a error on a pickoff attempt to nab Vazquez at third.
One inning later the lead doubled as Levi Wright blasted his
third homer of the year, a two-run shot to left that also scored
Ryan Allen, who doubled earlier.
In the fifth the Abbey closed the scoring as Kennan Stanley
worked a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on Michael
Falsetti's double to left center.
Stull did the rest, as he worked seven and two-thirds innings,
scattering six hits and striking out three. He did walk four. Stull
worked out a jam in the top of the first as the Huskies loaded the
bases with one out, but he ended the threat with two strikeouts.
Parks Smithey pitched the final inning and a third, allowing just
one hit. Bloomsburg starter Kyle Hunter took the loss. He gave up
four runs on seven hits in three and one-thirds innings.
Belmont Abbey totaled 13 hits as Pilla and Vazquez both led the
way with three each. Wright and Amor had two each. Brad Smith and
Joey Casselberry both led the Huskies with two hits apiece.
Bloomsburg finished with seven.
In game two, which was only seven innings, the Crusaders scored
the first eight runs of the game as they plated five in the second,
with the big blow coming on Pilla's two RBI double. Pilla later
scored on a double by Levi Wright, Adam Venditti scored on a wild
pitch, and Wright scored on a groundout by Ryan Allen.
Two frames later the lead grew to 8-0 as Stanley ripped a two
RBI single, and Pilla scored on a Vazquez double.
Bloomsburg began its comeback in the top of the fifth as it
scored seven times to trim the Abbey's lead to one. The first six
Husky batters of the inning reached base, five by base hit, before
a strikeout by Kyle Rogers halted the threat momentarily. Rogers
then hit Casselberry with the bases loaded which scored another
run, followed by a walk. After an infield fly, Brian Almand
delivered a two RBI single to cut the Abbey's lead to one. Rogers
was then lifted for Smithey, who recorded the final out. The
Crusaders used three pitchers in the frame.
The following inning the Huskies claimed their first lead of the
series as they scored three runs on two hits, the first of which
came on Casselberry's two RBI single that moved Bloomsburg ahead
for the first time. Cassleberry extended the lead to two when he
scored on a wild pitch.
That was all of the scoring until the bottom of the seventh when
the Abbey seized the win. Pagan led off the inning reaching on an
error. After Falsetti struck out, pinch hitter Matt Mazzolla was
plunked in the back on the very first pitch, and was lifted for
pinch runner Connor Kwalwasser. Pilla struck again, as he carved a
double into the gap in left center, scoring Pagan to cut the Abbey
deficit to 10-9. After Wright was hit by a pitch to load the bases,
Kwalwasser scored the tying run when Vazquez drew a base on balls
on a 3-2 count. Allen followed with a flyout to shallow center,
which brought Dimino to the plate, and he roped a single back
through the box, scoring Pilla, for the game winning run.
Smithey, the fourth and final pitcher of the day for the
Crusaders, was credited with the win after allowing three runs, one
earned, on four hits in the final two and one-thirds innings. He
fanned two and walked one. Matthew Dean, who entered the game in
the sixth inning, took the loss after giving up three runs, one
earned, on two hits.
Both teams finished with 11 hits as Pilla totaled three in three
at bats, as he finished six for seven in both games. He drove in
three runs. Vazquez and Stanley both drove in a pair of runs.
Almand led the Huskies with three hits. He also had two RBI.
Casselberry collected two hits and led the way with three RBI.
