The Belmont Abbey baseball team earned a 10-9 road win at
Anderson this afternoon in a non-conference matchup. Belmont Abbey
scored four times in the top of the eighth after trailing 7-6, and
held on for the win after the Trojans scored twice in the bottom of
the eighth. Belmont Abbey moves to 12-4-1, while Anderson drops to
5-16.
Belmont Abbey struck for two in the first on a two RBI single by
Kennan Stanley, and after Anderson scored once in the bottom of the
inning, the Crusaders added two more in the second as Emilio Pagan
singled home John Pilla and Ian Vazquez.
The Trojans countered with one in the bottom of the second and
two more in the third to knot the game at four, but the Abbey
quickly moved back ahead in the fourth with two runs. Vazquez
reached on a two out bunt single and stole second. After a walk to
Pagan, Vazquez and Pagan executed a double steal that moved both
men up one base, and Anthony Dimino brought both of them home with
a triple to right that pushed the Abbey ahead 6-4.
Those would be the last Abbey runs until the bottom of the
eighth as the Trojans scored three unanswered runs, starting with
two in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Eric Sanderson, and
another one inning later on a run scoring single by Josh Hickman,
which moved Anderson ahead 7-6.
Neither team scored in the seventh, and the Crusaders stormed
ahead for good in the eighth as they scored four times, getting two
RBI singles from both Pagan and Michael Falsetti, which moved the
Crusaders ahead 10-7.
Anderson trimmed the Abbey lead to one in the bottom of the
frame, as Sanderson's groundout to second produced the first run,
and the other scored on a wild pitch.
That turned out to be the final runs of the game, as both teams
were retired in order in the ninth inning.
Pagan, who finished two for three with three RBI, also earned
the win as he worked the final three and two thirds innings
allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits. He struck out four. He
was the last of five Abbey pitchers. Kyle Francis, the third of
five Trojans hurlers, was charged with the loss after yielding
three runs on two hits in a third of an inning.
The Crusaders totaled 13 hits as Vazquez led the way with three
in five at bats. He also scored four times. Pagan and Dimino both
had two hits.
