Belmont Abbey pinch hitter Matt Mazzolla plated Michael
Accettullo with the winning run with one out in the bottom of the
tenth inning as the Crusaders baseball team upset the nationally
tenth-ranked Catawba Indians 4-3 this afternoon at Abbey Yard. The
Crusaders, winners of five-straight, move to 22-7-1, while Catawba
falls to 25-9.
After Anthony Dimino put the Abbey ahead 2-0 in the third on a
two-run homer, Catawba scored three unanswered runs, starting with
one in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
Belmont Abbey fired right back in the seventh to deadlock the
game at three. Connor Kwalwasser led off with a double to left,
moved to third on a balk and scored on a groundout by Michael
Falsetti.
The contest remained tied until the bottom of the tenth when the
Abbey won the game. Kyle Buchanan led off with a single back up the
middle and was replaced by Accettullo. Weston Clarke then fouled
out deep in first base territory, but it was enough for Accettullo
to tag up and reach second just before the tag. Quinn Hawksworth
moved him to third on a fielder's choice, and then Mazzolla ended
it when he reached on a fielder's choice, as Accettullo just eluded
the tag at the plate to score the winning run.
Nate Cudney earned the win in two innings of relief, as he
allowed just one hit, striking out four in seven batters faced.
Graham Lawing took the loss after giving up one run on four hits in
three innings. He struck out one.
The Crusaders totaled 12 hits as Dimino, Falsetti, Kwalwasser
and Ian Vazquez all had two.
