Anthony Dimino had a three hit day and Michael Falsetti was one
of four players with two hits to lead an 11 hit attack. However,
the Crusaders pitching surrendered double digit walks that
ultimately led to the Abbey(14-5-1) dropping an 8-7 decision to
Bloomsburg on Sunday afternoon at Abbey Yard.
The Crusaders, winning three straight prior to today, sent Nolan
Houmes to the bump in the hopes of sweeping the Huskies in the
three game set. Parks Smithey, the usual game three starter, was
used in a relief role in consecutive games on Saturday. Houmes
would not factor in the decision. A four run first for Bloomsburg
was helped, in part, by three unearned runs in the frame. Head
Coach Scott Brickman followed with Dakota Irwin, Forest Buchanan
and Matt Davenport on the mound for the Crusaders. Davenport, in
pursuit of a midweek starting role, put together his best outing of
2013, allowing one earned run over four innings, striking out two,
walking one.
Offensively, the Crusaders matched the Huskies with a four spot
in the first to negate the fast start for Bloomsburg. Ian Vazquez
showed off his plus speed with a perfect push bunt past the mound
to lead off. Ryan Allen laced a single through the right side of
the infield, followed by a Dimino walk. Michael Falsetti singled
home Allen and Dimino to cut the lead in half. Emilio Pagan rolled
a drag bunt down the third base line to load the bases for Adam
Venditti. Venditti's sacrifice fly plates Stanley cutting the lead
to one. John Pilla reached on a fielding error, scoring Falsetti
to close out the scoring. The Crusaders would score again in the
fourth, but would enter the ninth trailing 8-5.
Eric Geedey would stifle the Crusaders through his first four
innings of work, allowing a lone base hit to Dimino. In the ninth,
however, Dimino would strike again with his third hit of the day to
lead off. Kennan Stanley would double to left, bringing life to
the fans that stayed to see the finale. Falsetti bounced over
Geedey's glove for an infield single that would end up scoring both
Dimino and Stanley to bring the Crusaders to within a run. Tyler
Hill would close out the game by coaxing a 3-6-1 twin killing to
salvage the win for the Huskies. The save was Hill's first, as
Geedey went to 3-0 on the season. Dakota Irwin was pegged with the
loss for the Abbey.
