Box Score

Lenoir-Rhyne forward Ariel Dominguez scored the golden goal with 14 seconds left in double overtime to give the Bears women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Belmont Abbey this afternoon at Alumni Field. Lenoir-Rhyne moves to 5-2-1, while the Abbey, which saw its five match winning streak snapped, drops to 7-2.

The match was looking like it was headed for a 1-1 draw before a final Bears rush produced the winner. The Bears sailed a high through ball over the Abbey defense to the foot of Arcelle Alequine, whose shot was saved by Hannah Kohls. The rebound, however came right to Dominguez, who faced an empty net. Her shot beat the Abbey defender on the line for the game winner.

It was Belmont Abbey that drew first blood in the match, as sophomore forward Meghan Philp lifted a high pass forward towards Ananda Gebreyesus. Gebreyesus and a Bears defender raced side-by-side for a few steps, until Gebreyesus beat her with a move to the outside. She met the the ball just before goalkeeper Genny Little did, and she toe-tapped it forward, while Little raced back to try to stop it from crossing the line. Little and Gebreyesus collided, with Little falling into the goal, while Gebreyesus slammed into the post, but the ball crossed the line at the 23:26 mark for the 1-0 lead.

The Bears became level shortly before the half, as Alequine took a Lizzie McNamara corner kick and blasted a left footed shot from the left corner of the box into the far post for the equalizer.

That was all of the scoring until Dominguez's winner, but both teams had chances to score in the overtime period. With just 45 seconds gone by in the first overtime, Philp had a chance to end the match, but her shot sailed just inches over the crossbar.

Later in the second overtime, right before its game winner, the Bears had a golden chance to strike, but midfielder Jillian Lang tracked back and deflected the shot from five yards out to keep the game alive.

Lenoir-Rhyne outshot the Abbey 28-11 and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Kohls made 11 saves, nine coming in the second half and the two overtimes.
