Women's Volleyball Drops Five Set Heartbreaker To Queens, 3-2

The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team rallied back from an 0-2 deficit to force a fifth set, and the Crusaders and Queens University battled through extra points in the fifth set until Queens claimed the win on an Abbey net error to hold on for a 3-2 win this afternoon. Queens improves to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey is now 9-3 overall and 1-1 in Conference Carolinas. Today's match was the first non 3-0 decision for the Crusaders this season.

Queens won the first two sets by matching scores of 25-22 but the Abbey rallied to claim the win in set three with a 25-21 win and forced a fifth with an extra point 26-24 win.

In the fifth set, which goes to 15 points, the Abbey opened up a 6-2 lead but the Royals ran off four straight wins to knot the set at six. From there, both teams traded points until a Lydia Schellenberg kill gave the Abbey match point at 14-13. Queens staved off the loss with a kill. Angela Jubb and Kemp knocked down back-to-back winners to deadlock the set at 15, and Ashlyn Dibrell of Queens followed with a kill to give the Royals match point at 16-15.

After an Abbey timeout, Jubb kept the math alive with a kill, but Lindsey Everhart of Queens answered right back to give the Royals match point for the second time, but on the next play, Everhart was called for a net violation to deadlock things again, this time at 17. On the next point, Dibrell's slam gave Queens yet another match point, but the Abbey answered with a kill from Caitlin Hankins.

The Abbey earned match point on the next play when Elizabeth Bialkowski's attempt sailed wide, but that was followed by an error from Hannah Schellenberg to tie the set at 19. Schellenberg shook off the error and responded with a kill on the next play to give the Abbey the lead at 20-19, its third match point of the set. Kemp, however, kept the match going with the 16th of her 17 kills to tie the set at 20. She gave the Royals the lead at 21-20 with another kill and Queens won the match when Jubb's attempt landed in bounds, but the referree determined she was in the net, giving the Royals the win.

Hannah Schellenberg led all players with 18 kills and 12 digs, while Lydia Schellenberg added 17. Jubb posted 12. Lydia Schellenberg led the Abbey with 20 digs. Kay Schellenberg handed out 56 assists, eight digs and two block assists. Julianne Pisano added 14 digs and Remick Tiller posted ten. Jubb added nine. The Abbey registered seven total blocks as Hankins finished with four total, two assisted and two solo.

Kemp led the Royals with 17 kills, while Anna Gibbs totaled 14. Everhart posted 13, Dibrell contributed ten and Bialkowski knocked down ten. McKenzie Martin handed out 62 assists and ten digs. Libero Jocelyn Kellinger led all players with 28 digs.
