Baseball Eliminated From Conference Carolinas Tournament With 13-3 Loss To Mount Olive

The Belmont Abbey baseball team was eliminated from the Conference Carolinas Tournament with a 13-3 loss to the top-seeded Mount Olive Trojans this afternoon at Fleming Stadium.

The Crusaders will close out the 2011 season Tuesday afternoon with a contest at Francis Marion.

Six of the Trojans first seven batters scored to start the game, capped by a three-run homer by junior Daniel Coffey. Senior Joseph Westbrook and Coffey each drove in four runs.

All nine Trojan starters had multiple hits including four hits apiece by seniors Ryan Faison and Jason Simone. Coffey added three base knocks.

Belmont Abbey was led by a 2-for-3 performance with one RBI by junior Kyle Buchanan. Senior Roberto Sanchez added a pair of hits and a run scored. Senior Michael Maples drove in the Crusaders last run with a pinch hit single in the ninth. The Abbey tallied three of its eight hits in the final frame.

Mount Olive starter Capps (9-0) remained undefeated in his collegiate career, supplying the Trojans with six innings of scoreless work. Capps only allowed four singles, two hit batsmen and one walk while striking out eight Crusader batters.

Junior Steven Theile was only able to record one out to start the game for Belmont Abbey. Theile (6-3) gave up six runs on five hits - including Coffey's homer - and a walk before being pulled. The Crusaders sent seven total arms to the mound.
