The Belmont Abbey baseball team completed its three-game
Conference Carolinas sweep at Pfeiffer, posting a pair of
come-from-behind wins of 7-6 in 11 innings and a 7-4 win in the
nightcap. The Abbey moves to 27-8 overall and 11-2 in Conference
Carolinas, while Pfeiffer drops to 13-22 overall and 6-9 in
Conference Carolinas.
In the opener, the Abbey trailed 3-1 going to the top of the
ninth, but the Crusaders pushed across two runs on one swing of the
bat to force extra innings. After a leadoff flyout, Chris Vazquez
roped a single to left center that was followed by an opposite
field homer to right center by Tim Dye to deadlock the game at
three.
The Falcons threatened to end the game in the bottom of the
ninth, but came away with no runs. Tyler Smith led off with a
double to left and was sacrificed to third by Hunter Boehme. After
a Crusader change on the mound and in the field, reliever Jordan
Cudney recorded a strikeout of Aairn Sharpe for the second out. An
intentional walk to Eric Shoemaker put runners on first and third
with two outs, but Cudney ended the threat when Shoemaker was
forced at second.
In the tenth the Abbey surged ahead by three as Justin Vasquez
ripped an RBI triple to right, scoring Roberto Sanchez, who worked
a leadoff walk. After a walk to Joey Frabasile and a Pfeiffer
pitching change, Buchanan grounded a ball to shortstop, but the
throw to second to cancel Frabasile was wild, allowing Vasquez to
score and move the Abbey lead to 5-3. Vazquez made it 6-3 with a
double to the gap in left center.
Down to its final three outs, Pfeiffer's response was quick and
fruitful as it kept the game alive with one swing of the bat. Jacob
Yates led off with a single to center. A strikeout and a foul out
to first moved the Falcons down to their final out. Mike Green kept
the game alive with an infield single. Both runners moved up one
base on a passed ball, and Smith tied the game at six with a three
run shot to left. A strikeout to Boehme ended the inning.
The Crusaders fired right back in the top of the eleventh, as
Josh Frazier led off with a double. Sanchez then hit a comebacker
to the pitcher, but Frazier scooted to third and Sanchez reached on
a fielder's choice, making both runners safe, with nobody out.
Caleb Shore then hit a long fly ball to right, deep enough for
Frazier to score the go-ahead run. Cudney retired the side in order
to preserve the win.
Cudney struck out four and allowed three runs on three hits in
the final two and two-thirds innings to earn the win. John
Sullivan, the third and final Pfeiffer pitcher, was charged with
the loss. He gave up the winning run on two hits in an inning and
two-thirds. Vazquez had two of the Abbey's six hits. He and
Pfeiffer's Smith, who also had two hits, were the only players in
the game to record more than one.
In game two, which lasted seven innings, the Crusaders erased a
2-1 deficit by scoring two in the sixth and four more in the
seventh to cap the sweep.
The Crusaders drew first blood in the bottom of the first when
Sanchez scored from third on a wild pitch after he led off with a
double and moved to third on a groundout.
Pfeiffer answered in the bottom of the second with two runs, and
that was all of the scoring until the top of the sixth when the
Crusaders grabbed the lead for good with two runs, both coming on a
double to center by Buchanan, the third-consecutive double of the
inning. Vasquez and Frabasile doubled before Buchanan's
two-bagger.
Belmont Abbey blew the game open one inning later, widening its
advantage to 7-2 with four runs. The Abbey received an RBI double
by Vasquez, an RBI single from Vazquez, a fielder's choice RBI by
Dye that also produced a Falcons error that allowed Vasquez and
Frabasile to come home.
Pfeiffer closed the gap to 7-4 on a two-run, two out homer by
Preston Lyon, but a groundout ended the game.
Cody Stull worked a complete-game, striking out a career-high
nine batters. He gave up four runs on eight hits to earn the win,
his fifth to move his record to 5-0. Bryan Tuttle took the loss. He
fell to 4-3 as he gave up seven runs, six earned, on eight hits in
six innings. He struck out five.
Buchanan finished three for four with two RBI. Sanchez and
Vasquez both collected two hits as the Crusaders recorded nine.
Lyon and Jesse Dunn both led Pfeiffer with two hits apiece.
