2/9/2011 12:00:00 AM

The Belmont Abbey baseball team moved to 4-2 on the year after dropping game one and taking the second game in a doubleheader with the visiting Carson-Newman Eagles. Both games were scheduled for seven innings. The Abbey fell 10-4 in game one and rallied to win 4-1 in the second game that was shortened to five innings. Carson-Newman is now 3-3 on the year.

In the opener, the Eagles scored the first two runs of the game, plating one each in the third and fourth innings before surrendering its lead in the bottom of the fourth as the Crusaders scored twice. Michael Vargas became the Abbey's first base runner of the game when he led off the fourth being hit by a pitch. Robby Thigpen, son of former Major Leaguer Bobby Thigpen, set down the first nine batters before plunking Vargas. John Cucchiarella then reached when his bunt attempt was thrown wildly, allowing him to reach first and moving Vargas to second. Both men moved up one base on a groundout to second by Kyle Buchanan. Joey Frabasile put the Abbey ahead with a single to left, scoring Vargas and Cucchiarella.

The lead was short lived, as the Eagles regained the lead one inning later by scoring three runs, getting a two RBI single by Lucas Mohon and a sacrifice fly from Kyle Koeneman.

The Crusaders were scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, and the Eagles did the same in the top of the sixth, but the Abbey pulled one run back in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homer by Buchanan to trim the C-N lead to 5-3.

Carson-Newman pulled away in the top of the seventh by scoring five runs. After the first batter was retired, the Eagles laced three doubles, two of those driving in runs, around a walk and received a two RBI single from Mason Guyman. Evan Patterson ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly that plated Aaron Vargas.

The Abbey scored one run in the bottom of the seventh as Vargas stroked a one out double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Buchanan.

Buchanan and Frabasile both finished with two of the Abbey's seven hits and combined to drive in all four Crusader runs. Mohon led the Eagles with a four for four effort with three RBI and two runs scored.

Thigpen earned the win after allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits in five and one-thirds innings of work. He fanned three. Lucas Watson picked up the save after yielding one run on three hits in the final inning and two-thirds. Forrest Buchanan took the loss. He allowed three runs, one earned, on no hits in an inning and a third.

In the nightcap that was stopped after five runs due to darkness, the Crusaders took advantage of six Carson-Newman errors to score four runs, only one earned.

The Abbey opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Frabasile reached on an error to open the inning. Three pitches later, Chris Vazquez hit a towering homer to left to give the Abbey a 2-0 lead.

It grew to 3-0 one inning later as Cucchiarella hit a comebacker to the mound, but the throw sailed into rightfield as he moved to second on an error. Vargas followed with a grounder to third that was bobbled into leftfield. He moved to second when the throw from leftfield sailed down to first base. Cucchiarella moved to third on that play. After a pitching change, Buchanan grounded out to second, but it scored Cucchiarella

The Eagles pulled one back in the fourth as Wesley Dozier led off with a walk, moved to second on a single and scored on a single by Troy Zawadzki, but the Abbey matched it in its half of the frame. Gabby Amor led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Cucchiarella. After a pitching change, Amor moved to third when a pickoff attempt from Mike Mullen sailed into centerfield. He then scored on a wild pitch. After two strikeouts ended the inning, the game was stopped due to darkness.

Taylor West picked up the win after holding C-N to one run on four hits in five innings. He fanned three. Tyler Cuming was charged with the loss. He gave up three runs, one earned, on two hits in two innings.

Belmont Abbey finished with three hits, while Carson-Newman registered four. All seven hits in the game came from seven different players.
