Baseball Blanks Wingate, 8-0

Belmont Abbey senior infielder Chris Vazquez went four-for-five with two doubles and five RBI to lead the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey College past Wingate University 8-0 in NCAA Division II baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Belmont Abbey improves to 12-4 overall, while Wingate falls to 11-4 on the season.

Senior infielder Roberto Sanchez added a homer to the Belmont Abbey attack, while junior infielder Joey Frabasile scored a pair of runs. Senior left-hander Michael Maples tossed six innings of three-hit ball for the Crusaders on the afternoon.

Senior outfielder Cale Rogers went two-for-four to lead the Wingate attack. Four different Bulldogs collected one hit each, all of which were singles.

The Crusaders scored their first run in the fourth, taking advantage of two Wingate errors as Frabasile crossed the plate to make it 1-0. Belmont Abbey added three more runs in the sixth when Vazquez ripped a bases-loaded three-run double down the left field line to make it 4-0.

A solo homer from Sanchez in the seventh, his second of the season, made it 5-0. An RBI single from junior outfielder Justin Vasquez pushed the lead to six in the eighth. Vazquez capped the scoring in the ninth, lining a two-run single to center to give Belmont Abbey an 8-0 lead.

Maples improves to 2-0 on the season, allowing only three singles in six innings, striking out three and walking one. He threw 69 pitches in his six innings of work, 49 of which were strikes. Freshman right-hander Ben Currie took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the year. He allowed three earned runs on three hits in six innings of work, striking out four.
