Belmont Abbey shortstop Gabby Amor finished three for four with
four RBI as the Crusaders baseball team won its fourth-straight
game with a 9-2 win over the visiting Mars Hill Lions this
afternoon at Abbey Yard. The Abbey moves to 8-3, while Mars Hill is
now 5-5.
Amor, hitting out of ninth spot, recorded three singles, but
each drove in runs as he laced an RBI single in the third, a two
RBI single in the fourth and added another RBI single in the
seventh. The Crusaders finished with 15 hits as Amor and Justin
Vasquez both finished with three hits. Vasquez scored three runs.
Roberto Sanchez, Joey Frabasile and Tim Dye each added two. Caleb
Shore drove in two runs.
Mars Hill finished with ten hits as leadoff man Michael Bueker
led the Lions with three hits. Adam Lewis and Rusty Smith both
finished with two.
Michael Maples picked up the win. He gave up two runs, one
earned, on six hits in the five innings, striking out three. Jon
Bullington was charged with the loss. He surrendered five runs on
eight hits in four innings. Taylor West picked up the save. He
worked four scoreless innings, scattering four hits and fanning two
batters.
Mars Hill scored the first two runs of the contest, plating one
each in the first and third innings. In the first Bueker led off
with a single to center, moved to second on a groundout and to
third when Maple's pickoff attempt to second sailed into the
outfield. He then scored on a wild pitch.
Two innings later, the Lions lead grew to 2-0 as Michael
Brittian recorded an RBI groundout to second, scoring Lewis, who
laced a one out single to center and moved to third on a single by
Smith.
In the third, the Abbey started a streak of scoring in each
remaining inning as started with one run. Vasquez led off with an
infield single, moved to second on a groundout by Danny Brion, and
scored on Amor's single to left center.
One inning later, the Abbey took the lead for good as it blew
the game open with four runs. Amor laced a two-RBI single that
scored Vasquez and Dye, and Shore logged both of his RBIs two
batters later as he plated Amor and Brion to extend the lead to
5-2.
Vasquez widened the lead to 6-2 the following inning as he
carved a double to the gap in right center, scoring Dye, who opened
the inning with a single.
In the sixth, Sanchez led off with a double to left, moved to
second on a sacrifice bunt by Shore and scored on a single from
catcher Kyle Buchanan.
Amor added another RBI single in the seventh as he drove home
Vasquez, and Frabasile closed the scoring in the eighth as he
doubled home John Cucchiarella, who pinch ran for Buchanan after he
drew a walk.
