The Belmont Abbey baseball team scored 28 runs in two games as
it swept Young Harris College in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon,
taking game one 11-3 and winning the nightcap 17-9. The Abbey is
now 6-3, while Young Harris drops to 1-5. Both games were seven
innings long.
In the opener, the Crusaders scored 11 runs on ten hits as they
plated two in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Caleb
Shore, who later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tim
Dye.
Young Harris pulled to within one in the second on a solo homer
by Adam Moore, but the Crusaders matched that run in the bottom of
the inning on a single to right center by Roberto Sanchez, scoring
Gabby Amor, who doubled in the previous at bat.
The Mountain Hawks responded in the top of the third, taking
advantage of two Abbey errors to score one run and trim their
deficit to 3-2, but the Abbey scored three times in the bottom of
the inning, using two Young Harris errors to score three unearned
runs to build its lead to 6-2.
The Crusaders blew the contest wide open in the bottom of the
fifth, scoring five times. Sanchez roped a two-RBI single followed
by a double from Kyle Buchanan that scored Sanchez. Joey Frabasile
followed with a towering fly ball to right that was dropped,
allowing two runs to score to move the Abbey lead to 11-2. Young
Harris scored the final run of the game in the top of the seventh
on a double play groundout.
Steven Thiele earned the win in five innings of work, allowing
two runs on five hits. Josh Rudnik took the loss after he allowed
six runs, three earned, on six hits in three and two-thirds
innings.
Sanchez finished with three of the Abbey's ten hits,while
Buchanan and Chris Vazquez both finished with two.
In the second game, the Crusaders led 7-0 after the second
inning, plating all seven of their runs in the second frame.
Vazquez blasted a two run homer to right, followed by a grand slam
from Shore. Buchanan made it back-to-back homers with a solo
shot.
The Mountain Hawks pulled three back in the top of the third and
scored two more in the fourth to cut their deficit to 7-5. Belmont
Abbey answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, using an
RBI single from Frabasile, a bases loaded walk to Amor, and a
two-RBI double to right from Josh Frazier.
Young Harris went down in order in the fifth and the Abbey
extended its lead to 13-5 in the bottom half as Frabasile lifted a
sacrifice fly to center, scoring Shore, who had earlier doubled and
moved to third on a single by Buchanan.
After a scoreless top of the sixth, the Crusaders scored four
more times in their half. Amor doubled home Vazquez, who led off
the inning with a walk. Amor scored on a single from Sanchez,
followed by an RBI single from pinch hitter Tyler Dye, scoring
Justin Vasquez, who was hit by a pitch. Matt Mazzolla ended the
Abbey's scoring when his groundout to short brought home
Sanchez.
Young Harris scored four times in the top of the seventh, but it
was not enough as the Crusaders won, 17-9.
Forrest Buchanan earned the win after allowing five runs on
seven hits in three innings. He struck out three. Moore was charged
with the loss. He allowed ten runs, all earned, on ten hits in
three and two-thirds innings.
Sanchez and Frabasile both had three hits as the Crusaders
finished with 16.
