The Belmont Abbey baseball team wrapped up the 2010 season with
an 11-4 loss to visiting Newberry College this afternoon at Abbey
Yard. Newberry ends its season with a record of 18-30, and the
Abbey finishes the 2010 campaign with an 18-27 mark.
Newberry jumped ahead 4-0 in the second frame as it took
advantage of a pair of Crusader errors to score four times. That
was all of the scoring until the top of the seventh when shortstop
Scott Horvath doubled home Jovan Rohena, who singled earlier.
Down 5-0, the Abbey charged back to within one run in the bottom
of the seventh, scoring four times with two outs. Daniel Torrente
singled to left, followed by a hit by pitch to Ryan Ronda. After an
infield popout, Vinnie Santoemma scooted a seeing-eye single
through the left side to load the bases for Roberto Sanchez, who
beat out an infield single that scored Torrente for the Crusaders
first run. One batter later, Justin Baxley emptied the bases with a
double to left center to pull the Abbey to within one run at
5-4.
Newberry answered right back, scoring five times in the top of
the eighth, three coming on a homer by Chris Love, one coming on a
single by Terrance Gray and another on an Abbey fielding error to
push the advantage to 10-4. The final run of the season came on a
solo homer from Sanchez Gartman to leadoff the ninth.
Dale Bennett, the first of three Newberry pitchers, earned the
win after giving up four runs on eight hits in six and two-thirds
innings. He walked one and struck out one. Abbey starter Evan Jonas
took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits in an inning
and two-thirds.
Newberry rapped out 13 hits as Gray, Horvath and Andy Vogel each
had three hits. Love drove in three runs while Gray collected two
RBI. Santoemma led the Abbey with two hits as it finished with
nine.
