The Belmont Abbey baseball game fell at Newberry 4-1 this
evening in the penultimate game of the year for both
teams. Newberry moves to 17-30 on the season, while Belmont Abbey
is now 18-26. The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m. in
Belmont, N.C., to close out the season.
Newberry pitcher Chris Roman was dominant on the mound
throughout the game, striking out 13 batters in seven and
two-thirds innings.
Newberry opened the scoring in the third inning when Jovan
Rohena hit a one-out double down the left-field line. Chris Love
plated him with a single through the left side.
The scarlet and gray extended the lead to 2-1 in the fourth
inning. Michael Morin singled to second on a groundout and stole
third before Terrence Gray brought him home with an RBI single to
right. Belmont Abbey's Justin Baxley (Marianna, Fla.) made it a 2-1
game with a leadoff home run in the sixth.
Newberry clung to the 2-1 until the bottom of the eighth, when
Jose Rosa and Morin each hit bases loaded RBI singles to provide
insurance. BAC would load the bases in the ninth, but Zach Tutak
got the final out to earn his third save of the year.
Roman moved to 4-7 on the year with the win, while Belmont
Abbey's Tyler Powell fell to 4-7 with a complete game loss. Morin
went 3-for-4, while Love, Rosa and Scott Horvath each earned two
hits in the win.
