Roberto Sanchez rapped out four hits in five at bats and drove
in four runs as the Belmont Abbey baseball team completed a
three-game sweep of Limestone with an 8-3 win this afternoon. The
Abbey moves to 17-21 overall and finishes with a14-9 Conference
Carolinas mark. The Saints fall to 12-32 overall and 7-17 in
Conference Carolinas.
The Crusaders took an early 3-0 in the top of the first and
would build on their lead over the next couple of innings. In the
first, the Crusaders used an RBI double by Spencer Sobol and a run
scoring single by Daniel Torrente.
The Abbey would hold a 7-0 lead after six innings, scoring twice
in the fourth on a two RBI single by Sanchez. It added another run
in the fifth as Roland Rodriguez scored on a double play. One
inning later, Vinnie Santoemma ripped a one out single and moved to
third on a throwing error on an attempted pickoff. Sanchez brought
him home with a single. Limestone would get on the board in the
bottom of the sixth with three runs, but the Crusaders added a
single run in their half of the eighth inning on an RBI single by
Sanchez.and take the victory, 8-3.
Rodriquez finished three for five with two runs scored. Sobol
was two for-two with a run batted in and a run scored. Joey Kopp
took the win as he allowed just one hit over three scoreless
innings. Marques Kyles suffered the loss after giving up one earned
run in two and two-thirds innings.
The Abbey clinched the third seed in the upcoming
Conference Carolinas Tournament. The Crusaders will open the
tournament Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. against the Pfeiffer
Falcons.
