The Belmont Abbey baseball team swept both games of a
doubleheader at Limestone on Saturday. The Abbey took game one,
6-2, and game two, 6-0. With the losses, Limestone drops to 12-31
overall (7-16 Conference Carolinas) while the Crusaders improve to
16-21 (13-9 conference).
The Saints would get on the board first in game one in the third
inning as Casey Seay delivered a double that plated David Christy.
Belmont Abbey would counter by scoring single runs in the fourth
and fifth innings.
Limestone would tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth
when Josh Troutman singled home Drew Lydon. However, these would be
the last runs the Saints would score. The Crusaders would take the
lead with a run in the eighth inning and add three insurance runs
in the ninth to take a 6-2 victory.
Jordan Cudney earned the win in relief for the Crusaders as he
threw the final 1 1/3 innings allowing only two hits. Belmont Abbey
starter Steven Thiele worked the first seven innings, allowing only
one earned run.
Matt Crisp suffered the loss in a complete game effort. Crisp
went all nine innings, allowing five earned runs while collecting
eight strikeouts.
Justin Baxley led the Crusaders with a three-for four
effort with two RBI and a run scored. Roberto Sanchez finished two
for five with a run batted in and a run scored.
In game two, the Crusaders rode a strong performance from
starting pitcher Tyler Powell. Powell threw a complete game,
allowing no runs on five hits and collecting 12 strikeouts in
leading his team to a 6-0 win. Michael Mcabee took the loss as he
started on the mound and allowed four earned runs in four and
two-thirds innings of work.
Tim Dye led the Abbey at the plate going 3-4 with 3 runs batted
in. Spencer Sobol, Chris Vazquez, and Ryan Ronda each had two-hits
for the Crusaders. Powell took the win with his complete game
effort.
