The Belmont Abbey baseball team fell at Catawba 9-1 Tuesday
night at Newman Park. The Indians improve to 24-7, winning for the
11th time in 12 games. The Crusaders fall to 14-18.
Catawba got offensive support from Ryan Bostian and Corey Parker
who each provided three hits and three RBI. Parker had three
doubles, including one that drove in two runs with two-outs in the
fourth to give the Indians a 4-0 lead. Bostian doubled home three
in the sixth with two outs to extend the margin to 8-0.
Brett Hatley, making just his second start of the year, allowed
just five hits with no walks. He posted six strikeouts and improved
to 2-1. Justin Baxley had two of the hits for Belmont Abbey.
Spencer Sobol scored the lone run for the Crusaders on a sacrifice
fly from Tim Dye in the seventh. Sobol reached by an error to lead
off the inning.
Bostian led off the Catawba second with a single and scored the
game's first run after a single by Josh Hohn. Parker doubled home a
run in the frame for a 2-0 edge then added his two-run double in
the fourth.
Craige Lyerly doubled to open the fifth to extend his streak of
reaching base safely to 66 games. He moved to third on a swinging
bunt single by Bostian and scored on hit by John Neese. Bostian
then pushed the margin to 8-0 before the Crusaders got on the
board. Zeb Link's solo home run in the eighth accounted for the
final run.
Evan Jonas took the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits
in three and two-thirds innings.
