Tyler Smith's two-run homer and Jeremy Nowak's three-run homer
accounted for all of the runs in a five-run fifth innings as
nationally fourth-ranked Mount Olive rallied from a 3-0 deficit for
a 5-3 victory over Belmont Abbey in game two of a Conference
Carolinas baseball doubleheader Saturday at Scarborough Field.
Carter Capps went the distance for the Trojans, allowing only one
earned run in seven innings.
The Trojans took the opener 14-4 as Mike Knox hit his
nation-leading 20th home run of the season.
Mount Olive (29-4 overall, 14-3 Conference Carolinas) was held
scoreless on only two hits through four innings in the nightcap.
Belmont Abbey starter Nate Cudney (2-4) retired eight consecutive
batters before Kyle Hinrichs singled with one out in the bottom of
the fifth. Smith followed with his first home run of the season to
pull the Trojans within a run.
After Ryan Faison reached on a two-out error and Jesse Lancaster
walked, Nowak drove a pitch over the left-centerfield fence to put
Mount Olive ahead for the first time. The home run was Nowak's 14th
of the season.
Capps (7-0) scattered six hits, striking out six and walking
two. The complete game is his fourth of the season.
Belmont Abbey (13-17, 10-9) scored all of its runs in the second
inning as Josh Frazier reached on a bunt single to lead off the
inning and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly. A Trojan error
brought in the second run and Daniel Torrente capped the inning
with an rbi-single.
Nowak singled in his first at-bat in the first inning of game
two after barely keeping his hitting streak alive in the opener
with an infield single in five at-bats.
Mount Olive overcame an early 2-0 deficit in game one after
Roberto Sanchez's solo home run in the top of the first and Spencer
Sobol's leadoff home run in the top of the second. The Trojans
capitalized on Crusader miscues for four runs in the bottom of the
second and never looked back.
An error, wild pitch and bases-loaded walk helped Mount Olive
take a 4-2 and the Trojans added four more runs in the third.
Faison drove in two runs with a two-out single and came home on
Lancaster's triple. Lancaster scored on Nowak's single to extend
the lead to 8-2.
The Trojans were up 10-4 when Topher Ellis led off the bottom of
the seventh with his second home run in as many games and Knox
added a two-run shot.
Sean Lydon (7-0) recorded seven strikeouts in seven innings
before being lifted in the eighth with runners on first and second
and nobody out. Reliever Craig Beasley got out of the jam with a
4-6-3 double play and a strikeout. Beasley overcame a ninth-inning
walk with a strikeout and a game-ending 5-4-3 double play.
Belmont Abbey starting pitcher Tyler Powell (3-5) went seven
innings and took the loss.
The two teams conclude their three-game series with a single
game Sunday at noon at Scarborough Field. Game time was moved up an
hour due to an expected rainstorm to hit Mount Olive during mid or
late afternoon.
