The Lenoir-Rhyne University Baseball Team (13-15) won in 12
innings over Belmont Abbey College (13-15), 8-7, Wednesday evening
at Bears Field. L-R junior designated hitter Brian Dice (Hickory,
N.C.) came through with the game-winning, RBI single in the bottom
of the 12th with the bases loaded and two outs.
Lenoir-Rhyne staked itself to a 6-0 lead after three innings of
play thanks to junior outfielder Stephen Andrews' (Winston-Salem,
N.C.) solo home run in the bottom of the second inning and senior
third baseman Alex Cooks' (Tampa, Fla.) three-run home run in the
third.
Andrews' home run was his team-leading 11th of the year as the
Bears snapped a four-game losing streak in the process.
After L-R pushed the lead to 7-0 on a solo home run by senior
outfielder Evan Taylor (Charlotte, N.C.) in the fifth inning,
Belmont Abbey responded with six runs in the top of the sixth
inning. The Crusaders' Justin Baxley (Miami, Fla.) had a
run-scoring double in the frame.
Belmont Abbey tied the contest at seven on a bases-loaded walk
by Danny Brion (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the eighth inning and the
game remained scoreless until Dice's heroics in the 12th.
L-R junior Chad Ritch (Haines City, Fla.) improved to 1-1 on the
season after pitching a scoreless 12th inning while Belmont Abbey's
Joey Kopp (Marietta, Ga.) fell to 1-1 with the loss.
Cooks finished with two hits and a game-high three runs batted
in while freshman shortstop Dalton Hall (Hickory, N.C.) added two
hits and drove in two to lead Lenoir-Rhyne.
