Box score
Trailing 11-5 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Belmont
Abbey baseball team scored five runs, four coming on a pair of home
runs, but the 17th-ranked Catawba Indians held on for an 11-10 win
over the Crusaders Thursday afternoon at Abbey Yard. The Indians
improve to 4-0, while the Crusaders fall to 1-4.
The Indians entered the ninth with a 10-5 lead and a two-out
solo home run by Wade Moore proved to be important at the end. The
Crusaders rallied and cut the margin to 11-10 on a three-run homer
by Chris Vazquez, but Travis McSweeney was able to get the final
out to preserve the win.
Catawba stranded five runners in the first three innings as the
Crusaders worked out of bases loaded jams in the first and third
innings. The Indians finally broke through in the fourth on a
two-out, two-run single by Link. Lyerly followed with a three-run
homer for a 5-0 edge.
Belmont Abbey tied the game in the fifth on a three-run shot by
Danny Brion. Clay Watson worked out of further damage and would
get the win as Catawba answered back with two runs in its sixth.
Link broke the tie on a single.
Brion added a second home run in the big ninth inning for
Belmont Abbey, totaling four RBI on the day. Vazquez and Justin
Vazquez each collected three hits. Both teams pounded out 16
hits.
