Baseball Completes Sweep Of St. Andrews Presbyterian With 29-3 Victory

The Belmont Abbey baseball team smacked 30 hits to complete the three-game Conference Carolinas series sweep of host St. Andrews Presbyterian College with a 29-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Clark Field. The Abbey batted .526 (30-for-57) for the game and .466 (62-for-133) for the weekend series

The Crusaders, who are currently ranked No. 10 in the NCBWA Southeast Regional Poll, improve to 23-18 on the season and conclude Conference Carolinas regular season play with a 14-5 league record. The Abbey sits in first place and are guaranteed to have the fewest league loses heading into the conference tournament in two weeks. The Knights hold a 5-31 overall record (3-12 conf.).

Belmont Abbey ripped four home runs in the series finale including a two-run shot in the first inning by sophomore Daniel Kassouf.

St. Andrews cut the deficit in half with one run in the home half of the first. Junior Samson Williams hit a single, stole second, and later scored on a double by classmate Josh Axelsen.

The Crusaders added a trio of runs in third inning to take a 5-1 advantage. Sophomore Chris Vazquez crushed a two-run homer in the frame. Kassouf and Vazquez both had three home runs in the series against the Knights. Kassouf leads the league with 17 homers on the season.

The Abbey scored in seven-of-nine innings including 15 runs in the final two innings. Kassouf finished with four hits and seven RBI. Junior Spencer Sobol had a game-high five hits including two doubles and a home run. Sobol scored four times and drove in three runs. Classmate Vinnie Santoemma added a pitch-hit home solo home run, his first digger of the season. Senior Josh Frazier and junior Roland Rodriguez both had four hits while also crossing home plate four times apiece.

Crusaders' senior starter Andrew Morton improves to 6-1 on the season allowing three runs on 10 hits over seven innings. Morton had seven strikeouts. Knights' sophomore counterpart Chris Dobbins took the loss.
