Abbey Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Young Harris on Senior Day

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team earned a Saturday split with Young Harris as the Crusaders closed out the home slate with Senior Day on Alumni Field.
The Crusaders won the opener 10-4 before falling 11-5 in the series finale.

With Saturday's results, Belmont Abbey is now 33-11 overall and 23-7 in Conference Carolinas play. Young Harris is now 33-13 with a 23-7 conference record in league play.

Caleb Burr led the offense for the Crusaders with seven hits on the day and two home runs while Spencer Cipro picked up his eighth win with his fifth complete game of the season.

Prior to the game, 18 seniors were recognized on senior day. The seniors are as follows: Spencer Cipro, Caleb Burr, Carter Bass, Joe Whitaker, Jack Boyles, Todd Velotta, Layton Dickerson, Sawyer Osborne, Josh Wilson, Mason Janz, Drew Stegura, Davin Miller-Madden, Brady Lencz, Jacob Steinberg, Isaac Williams, Jacob Williams, Quinn Benner and Ashton Plyler.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
  • Cipro threw just six pitches to retire Young Harris in the firs inning.
  • The Crusaders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to start thanks to an RBI single from Steinberg and a two-run single form Michael Fattore.
  • The Mountain Lions added three runs in the second inning but Burr hit the first of his two home runs with a solo shot in the first home run of the third inning.
  • The Crusaders added four more runs in the fourth with an RBI single from Whitaker and a three-run home run from Burr.
  • Young Harris added another run in the fifth but RBIs from Whitaker and Burr capped the scoring to make it 10-4.
  • Cipro struck out two in his fifth complete game of the season.

GAME 2
  • Young Harris jumped out to an early lead with seven runs in the first two innings.
  • The Crusaders got a run each in the fourth and fifth inning with an RBI single from Boyles and Jacob Steinberg scoring on a balk.
  • Both teams exchanged runs in the sixth and seventh innings with an RBI single from Burr and a two-run single from Matthew Fattore.
  • Burr finished with four hits in the series finale while Boyles had three.
  • Davin Miller-Madden took the loss for the Crusaders.

UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey heads on the road to close out the regular season starting with a contest at Mars Hill.
  • The Crusaders and Lions will play at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mars Hill.
