Trailing 3-0 after the first inning, the Belmont Abbey baseball
team scored 11 unanswered runs as it earned a Conference Carolinas
series win with a 17-7 triumph over the visiting Limestone Saints
in the rubber game of a three-game series. The Abbey improves to
11-12 overall and 5-4 in Conference Carolinas, while the Saints
fall to 12-9 overall and 5-4 in Conference Carolinas.
Andrew Morton earned the win after allowing six runs, five
earned, in six and two-thirds innings. He struck out six and walked
two. The bullpen combination of Nate Cudney, Evan Jonas and Jordan
Cudney combined to hold Limestone to just one run on three hits in
the final two and one-thirds innings, striking out three and
walking none. Limestone starter Brock White took the loss after
allowing seven runs, four earned, on eight hits in just two innings
of work. Limestone was charged with five errors as the Abbey scored
12 earned runs.
After Limestone scored three in the top of the first, the Abbey
got one back in its half and added another in the second on an RBI
single by Patrick Atwell. In the third, the Crusaders took the lead
for good by scoring five runs, and would add four more one inning
later, getting back-to-back homers by Danny Brion and Justin
Vasquez, and an RBI single by Spencer Sobol.
Limestone would push one across in the fifth on an Aldo Mendez
single, but the Abbey responded with two more in the sixth, taking
advantage of a Saints error for the first run and using an RBI
single by Atwell. The Saints added two in the seventh and one in
the eighth, but the Abbey scored one in the seventh on a run
scoring double by Justin Baxley, and three more in the eighth, with
two coming on a double by Daniel Kassouf.
The Abbey pounded out 22 hits as Sobol finished four for six
with an RBI, while Atwell, Kassouf and Brion all finished with
three. Brion and Vasquez both drove in three runs.
Limestone recorded 14 hits as four Saints led the way with two
each.
