The Belmont Abbey baseball team fell to Barry 4-2 this afternoon
at Smith Road Complex on the campus of Newberry College. Barry
improves to 6-1, while the Abbey falls to 6-6.
Brad McAllister, the first of four Barry pitchers, earned the
win after giving up two runs on nine hits in five innings, striking
out three and walking none. Evan Jonas took the loss after giving
up two runs, one earned, on two hits in one-third of an inning.
Brian Milanes picked up the save. He worked the ninth inning,
giving up one hit and striking out one.
The Buccaneers struck early, scoring in the first inning when
Yan Gomes singled to right field to bring in Danny Lima. The
Crusaders tied it up in the third when Justin Vasquez singled to
right field allowing Spencer Sobol crossed the plate.
Barry regained the lead for good in the fourth on an RBI single by
Joel Keefe. Yudelmis Hernandez drew a bases-loaded walk, forcing in
Keefe from third to give Barry a 3-1 lead. Danny Brion cut the lead
to 3-2 on a pinch-hit solo homer in the fourth. That was all of the
scoring until the top of the ninth when the Buccanneers scored on a
sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 4-2. Down to its final two
outs, the Abbey brought the tying run to the plate with two outs
after a single by Justin Baxley, but Roland Rodriguez lined into a
game-ending double play.
