Belmont Abbey freshman third baseman Elio Rey drew a bases
loaded walk with two outs in the top of the ninth to break a 5-5
tie, and the Crusaders held off a Limestone rally in the bottom of
the inning as they extended their winning streak to four with a 6-5
win this afternoon at Bob Prevatte Park. The Abbey, which completed
the three-game sweep, improves to 30-14 overall and and 16-5 in
Conference Carolinas, while the Saints slip to 20-26 overall and
9-12 in Conference play.
Trey Summerlin earned the win after allowing just one hit over
two and two-thirds scoreless innings, striking out a pair. John
Merritt earned the save after retiring the final batter of the game
on a strikeout in the only batter he faced.
The Crusaders jumped ahead 2-0 in the first on a two-run homer
by Alex Castellanos, but the Saints responded with a solo homer in
their half to cut the lead to 2-1. Both teams plated two in the
third as the Abbey held a 4-3 lead, but Limestone scored two in the
sixth to claim a 5-4 lead.
That was the score until the top of the seventh when the
Crusaders scored on an error with two outs to knot the game at
five, and took the lead in the top of the ninth as Will Breslin
drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a single by Castellanos.
Carlos Vasquez moved both men over one base on a groundout. After
Seth Waller was intentionally walked to load the bases, Breslin was
cut down at home on a fielder's choice, but keeping the bases
loaded, and then Rey was walked, bringing Castellanos home with the
winning run.
Summerlin retired the first two batters in the top of the
inning, but issued a walk and then a single before giving way to
Merritt, who recorded a strikeout to end the game.
The Crusaders finished with ten hits as Rey and Castellanos both
led the way with three. Castellanos scored three times.
