The Belmont Abbey baseball team wrapped up an 11-1 win in the
suspended game two, and took the third and final game 4-1 at Barton
this afternoon in taking a 2-1 edge in the three-game series. Abbey
exited at 10-7 overall and 4-2 in the league while Barton stands
8-8, 2-4.
Belmont Abbey was leading Barton 10-1 at the end of six innings
when the game was called because of darkness on Saturday. The
Crusaders added one more run off the hot bat of Will Breslin in the
seventh inning Sunday afternoon to claim an 11-1 win. Abbey erupted
for 10 runs over the first four innings for a 10-0 lead. Four
singles and a walk led to four runs in the first. In the second,
Breslin belted a three-run homer. Two hit batsmen, a walk, a single
and a groundout plated two runs in the third and the 10th run came
in on two walks, a groundout and a sacrifice fly by Elio Rey in the
fourth. Breslin hit a solo homer in the seventh to finish 4-for-5
with 5 RBI. Hunter Meekins (2-1) was the losing pitcher after
getting chased in 1 1/3 innings, during which he allowed seven runs
on six hits. Michael Raymond (2-1) secured the win in six innings
of action. He yielded six hits and one unearned run while striking
out three.
In the final game of the series, Belmont Abbey put two runs on the
board in the first inning and never trailed. Carlos Vasquez, Alex
Castellanos and Jay McConnell collected two hits apiece for Abbey,
which outhit Barton 9-8. Vasquez doubled home two runs in the
first, Castellanos homered in the fourth and Patrick Atwell tripled
in a run in the sixth. Travis Holloman walked and eventually scored
on a double play in the first for Barton's lone run. Neither team
committed an error. Tyler Powell (1-2) scattered seven hits over 6
1/3 innings for the Crusaders. He walked one and fanned one. Senior
Chris Hill (1-3) took the loss for Barton. He went 5 2/3 innings
and allowed three runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked
three.
The Crusaders are back in action Wednesday afternoon at 2:00
when they host Augusta State.
