The Belmont Abbey baseball team dropped both games of a Sunday
doubleheader at Barry, losing game one 3-2 in 11 innings and
dropping the finale 12-2 in nine. In the first game, Barry scored
the winning run on a bases loaded walk drew a bases-loaded walk in
the bottom of the eleventh inning to seal the win.
The Crusaders built a 2-0 lead off Barry starter Andrew Koubek
on a pair of solo homers by Seth Waller and Ryan Ronda.
Crusader starter Michael Raymond carried a no-hitter into the sixth
inning, but Barry would get to him in the sixth. Raymond issued
consecutive walks to lead off the inning and Andrew Frezza laced a
single through the left side to break up both the no-hitter and the
shutout and knot the game at 2-2.
Abbey's Trey Summerlin and Barry's Aaron Main (1-1) then locked up
in a four-inning duel matching scoreless frames. Main earned the
win for the Bucs, allowing two hits and a walk in four innings,
while striking out two. John Merritt (0-1) took the loss for the
Crusaders, giving up one run on a hit and a walk in a third of an
inning.
In the nightcap, the Bucs scored seven runs in the third inning to
break open a 1-1 game and cruised to the 12-2 win.
Brian Milanes (1-0) worked six strong innings, holding the
Crusaders to a run on four hits and two walks, while fanning six.
Tyler Powell (0-2) took the loss, surrendering eight runs on eight
hits and six walks in 2.2 innings.
The Abbey is back in action Tuesday when it goes on the road to
face Augusta State.
