Belmont Abbey senior forward Luis Arrieta scored two goals,
Jesse Pitts added another and freshmen Michael Scharville and Ernie
Miller recorded their first career goals as the Crusaders defeated
North Georgia 5-1 this evening in the final match of the Laker
Shootout. The Abbey improves to 3-1 on the year.
The Cruaders, which outshot North Georgia 25-12, got on the
board in the 23rd minute when Arrieta gave the Abbey the lead for
good. JP Lebiecz and Paul Goding teamed up for the assist as
Arrieta fired home a shot from eight yards out.
The lead grew to 2-0 16 minutes later when Brian Souza fed a
pass to Pitts, who fired home a shot from 20 yards out.
Up 2-0 through the end of the first half, North Georgia got on
the board in the 60th minute to cut the advantage to 2-1, but the
Crusaders scored three unanswered goals 15 minutes apart to blow
the game open.
Arrieta struck again in the 71st minute as Scharville sent a
through ball ahead to Arrieta, who got behind the defense and
recorded his second goal of the night.
Eight minutes later it was Scharville's turn, recording his
first career goal on a penalty kick to widen the lead to 4-1.
Miller ended the scoring in the 85th minute as he tallied his
first career goal on a breakaway.
The Abbey is back in action Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 when it
opens the home schedule by hosting Lander.
