DUE WEST, S.C. — Sam Jordan recorded a hat trick as the Belmont Abbey men's soccer team rallied with six goals in the second half en route to an 8-3 win over Erskine Friday afternoon at Ralph Lundy Field.
Jordan's hat trick was the first in his time at Belmont Abbey as he was one of six different Crusaders to tally goals in the victory.
The eight goals is the most in a single game according to NCAA records dating back to the 1998 season. The Crusaders scored seven in a 7-0 victory at King back on October 4, 2023.
With the win, Belmont Abbey improves to 6-4-6 overall and 4-3-6 in Conference Carolinas play. Erskine closes its season with a 2-10-2 record and 2-9-2 mark in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders got off to a fast start with Jordan's goal in the opening minute of the match.
- Erskine pulled even with a goal in the 24th minute.
- Just before halftime, each team added another goal as Zac Birch scored in the 40th minute. The Fleet scored in the final seconds of the first half.
- Erskine pulled ahead early in the second half to take a 3-2 lead.
- Leo Harbottle scored his second goal of the season to pull Belmont Abbey even again in the 64th minute.
- The Crusaders went ahead for good in the 76th minute thanks to Darren Lawlor's goal in the 76th minute.
- Jordan would score the next two goals for the Crusaders while Mateo Mancera and Samuel Atherton capped the scoring for the Crusaders.
- Jordan finished with the hat trick and assist while Marcos Frias added two assists.
- Anthony Armas, Lawlor and Cory Lownds also recorded assists in the win.
- Trent McConnaughey made three saves in goal for the Crusaders.
- Belmont Abbey had a 23-8 advantage in shots and 14-6 in shots on goal.
- The Crusaders had eight corner kicks and held Erskine without one in the match.
