The Belmont Abbey baseball team wrapped up the 2007 season with a 7-2 home loss to Wingate this afternoon at Abbey Yard. The Bulldogs improve its record to 27-32, while the Crusaders end their season with a 31-23 mark.

Wingate starting pitcher Lee Oxendine earned the win, as he fanned 11 over seven innings, allowing just two runs on four hits. David Rue was charged with the loss. Rue, who carried a perfect game into the fourth and a no-hitter into the fifth, allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

The first four innings were scoreless until Wingate got on the board in the fifth on Spencer Robinson's solo homer to right. The Bulldogs would stretch the lead to 5-0 in the sixth, with the big blow coming on a two-run homer by designated hitter Josh Benton. The Bulldogs tacked two more on in the seventh to open up a 7-0 lead.

The Crusaders got on the board in the seventh. Senior shortstop Josh Haire ripped a two-out single to left center, which was followed by a two run homer to right by senior rightfielder Alex Udwari, on his last career at bat.

The Abbey finished with six hits as centerfielder Patrick Atwell led the way with two. Wingate finished with 12 hits.
