The Belmont Abbey Baseball team swept a three game losing streak
as it posted a pair of shutouts at Coker this afternoon, taking the
opener 1-0 and the nightcap 4-0. With the losses Coker falls to
18-29 overall, and 9-14 in the CVAC, while Belmont abbey improves
to 30-18 overall, and 16-7 in the CVAC.
In game one, the Abbey only recorded one hit, but that was all
that Crusaders starter Andy Helms needed, as he fired a complete
game shutout, allowing just five hits and striking out four.
Coker starter Brad Boob allowed just one run on one hit with
three strikeouts and two walks as took the loss.
Offensively, Seth Waller had the Abbey's lone hit, while Patrick
Atwell drove home the game winning run on a sacrifice fly.
In the seven inning nightcap, the Crusaders jumped out to an
early 2-0 led in the first and did not look back.
David Rue earned the win, going five innings, allowing two hits
with two strikeouts, and Brett DiPasquale earned the save, as he
allowed three hits in two scoreless innings.
Tyler McKenzie, Nick Popp and Waller were each 2-for-3, while
McKenzie had two RBIs and two runs scored and Waller and Popp each
had a double, and Waller had an RBI.
The Abbey will go for the sweep Sunday afternoon at 1:00
p.m.
