BELMONT, NC- The Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team dropped a
15-10 home decision to visiting Pfeiffer University this afternoon
at Alumni Field. With the win, the Lady Falcons improve to 6-2
overall and 4-1 in the CVAC, while the Abbey falls to 5-5 overall
and 4-3 in the CVAC.
The Abbey recorded 24 shots as freshman midfielder Chrissy Stokes
led the way with three goals on four shots. Kerri Gut and Brianna
Dignan both added a pair, while Tara Chmil, Gut and Laurie Jordan
all tallied one assist.
The first half was back-and-forth as the Crusaders' first seven
shots were goals, as they held a lead as big as two goals on two
separate occasions, at 6-4 and 7-5. Pfeiffer, would answer by
scoring the final four goals of the half to take a 9-7 lead into
the break.
The second stanza only saw nine goals, as the Lady Falcons
outscored the Abbey 6-3. Dignan scored the first goal of the half
to pull the Abbey within one at 9-8, but Pfeiffer stretched its
lead to three at 11-8 with a pair of unanswered goals. From there,
the Abbey could only cut the lead to as few as three at 13-10 on a
goal by Gut with 6:45 remaining, but Pfeiffer scored the final two
goals to seal the win.
Pfeiffer outshot the Crusaders 28-24 as Ashley Hill led all players
with four goals. The Lady Falcons also held a 19-17 advantage in
ground balls as goalkeeper Kristen Kibler finished with ten. She
also tallied ten saves. Abbey goalkeeper Kate Gavin finished with
four saves. Amanda Jones led the Abbey with three ground balls.
