MARS HILL, NC- The Belmont Abbey baseball team earned a 12-5 win
at Mars Hill College this afternoon for its second-consecutive win.
MHC falls to 9-23 on the season while the Crusaders improved to
20-12.
The Lions scored two in the first, but BAC cut the lead to 2-1 in
the second frame when Alex Castellanos scored on a Lion error.
Castellanos reached base by hitting a double.
After Castellanos singled to center field to lead off the fourth
inning, shortstop Josh Haire hit ripped a homer over the center
field fence to give the Crusaders a 3-2 advantage.
Austin Boehme tied the contest at three in the bottom half of the
fourth when scored on a single by David DeSilva.
DeSilva broke the 3-3 tie by hitting a sacrifice fly to right field
to send Matt Carter across the plate. Carter reached base after
getting hit by a pitch.
The Abbey answered by taking a 6-4 lead in the seventh inning after
it scored three runs on four hits, highlighted by a homerun by Seth
Waller.
After hitting a two-out double to center, Wassum trimmed the
deficit to 6-5 when Danny Miller singled to left field.
Alex Udwari extended the Crusader's advantage to 7-5 in the ninth
inning by hitting a lead-off homer down the right field line. The
Crusaders added five more insurance runs in the inning on four hits
and two Lion errors to make the final tally, 12-5.
Jason Kennel was charged with the loss as he fell to 0-3. Andrew
Morton earned the win after allowing one run on three hits in two
innings of work. He struck out four and did not issue a walk.
Haire led BAC with four RBI while Tyler McKenzie and Castellanos
each recorded three hits.
