Crusaders Compete at Conference Carolinas Tournament

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey acrobatics and tumbling team returned to action as the Crusaders took on Coker in the semifinals of the Conference Carolinas Tournament Saturday afternoon at Lander University.
 
It was the second meeting for the two teams this season but it ended in a different result with Coker coming away with a narrow 263.425-262.845 victory over The Abbey.
 
Coker advances to the Conference Carolinas Tournament championship against top-seeded Limestone Sunday while Belmont Abbey finishes its season at 8-3 overall.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Event 1—Compulsory
Belmont Abbey took an early 36.55-36.225 lead over the Cobras after the opening event. The Crusaders finished with scores of a 9.1 or better, highlighted by a 9.775 in the Pyramid Heat.
 
Event 2—Acro
Coker took the event with a 28.075-27.925 lead. Belmont Abbey's best scored came in Heat 1 (5 Element) with a 9.725-9.80. Erena Chaples, Maddie McCaule, Kristin Fary, Blythe Terrell and Lauren Phillips all contributed to that score for the Crusaders.
 
Event 3—Pyramid
Belmont Abbey took a 93.73-93.60 lead into halftime but it was the Cobras who held a slim 29.30-29.25 advantage over the Crusaders. Belmont Abbey had all three scores at 9.675 or higher, highlighted by a 9.825 in the Open Pyramid. Coker also recorded a perfect 10 in the Event.
 
Event 4—Toss
Belmont Abbey finished with a 27.10 for the event highlighted by scores of 9.1 in the 450 Salto Toss (Heat 1) and Open Toss (Heat 3) from start values of 9.4 and 9.3, respectively.
 
Event 5—Tumbling
The Crusaders regained the lead in the event thanks to being just one tenth of a point away from a perfect score in start value from the Aerial Pass (Heat 4) and Open Pass (Heat 6). Amiya Shazier scored a 9.5/9.6 in Heat 4 while Anna Davis earned a 9.0/9.1 in the final heat.
 
Event 6—Team Event
Coker took the meet thanks to the team event earning a 91.22/100.70 compared to an 89.57/101.22 for Belmont Abbey.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders will compete in six heats of the Event Finals that begin at 11 a.m. Sunday at Finis Horne Arena.
  • Belmont Abbey will learn its postseason fate on Monday when the NCATA unveils the full national championship bracket as well as those who qualify for the event finals.
