COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Belmont Abbey is set for its first NCAA Men's Volleyball National Collegiate Volleyball Championship appearance, preparing to face Penn State in the first opening round on Monday night. The match is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the Covelli Center on the Ohio State campus.
The Crusaders (15-7) captured their first Conference Carolinas championship on April 18, defeating top-seeded Mount Olive 3-1 in the final. Belmont Abbey has won four straight -- and eight of the last 10 -- matches, entering the tournament. Penn State (21-3) earned an automatic bid to the tournament by defeating George Mason in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association championship match on Saturday.
Other storylines for Monday's game:
- Â The Belmont Abbey men's volleyball program is in its ninth year of competition, all at the Division I-II level.
- Â The Crusaders finished second in the Conference Carolinas standings, earning the No. 2 seed on the final day of the regular season.
- Â Four Crusaders were named All-Conference Carolinas with Brennan Davis being the first-team setter.
- Â Davis was also named Conference Carolinas Tournament MVP.
- Â Junior Gage Giller returns home to Columbus. He played at Upper Arlington.
The winner of Monday's match faces Lewis at 8 p.m. on Tuesday night.
